Advanced Family Mediation Training

The objectives of the Advanced Mediation Training are to: 

• Acquire a more advanced understanding of the mediation process used for resolving (parenting responsibilities) custody and access issues as well as financial matters (theory);
• Improve practice (skill acquisition);
• Apply standards of professional conduct and ethical issues to the practice of mediation (knowledge).

METHODOLOGY

The process involves following and completing a mediation case (from the beginning of the case to the drafting of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Each session focuses on one step in the process of mediating parenting responsibilities (custody and access), child support, spousal support, and property division.

TRAINING OUTLINE  

Review of Mediation Model and Steps in mediation. Review of important Communication skills, e.g., active listening skills, agile listening, reformulating, reframing, working to a joint solution and dealing with difficult conversations, group exercise.

Parenting Plan, including Child Support; Spousal Support; and Developing Mediating Property and Financial Issues.

Role plays individual meetings with each client. Also, role play discussion re Parenting Plan and Preparation for Financial Mediation.

Negotiation plays an important role in all Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). This negotiations training workshop provides an in-depth introduction to the practice of Principled Negotiation and related concepts, rules, and practices. The use of negotiation strategies inside and outside mediation and within multi-party settings is explored. Participants can learn strategic negotiation practices and helpful labour relations negotiation techniques.  By the end of the training, participants should have a sound knowledge of the conceptual underpinnings of negotiation and have acquired skills to: 

• Understand, apply and critically evaluate the conceptual and theoretical background to negotiation. 
• Evaluate the main strategies and tactics appropriate for different negotiation contexts. 
• Prepare and participate in both simple and complex negotiations. 
• Analyze the process and outcomes of negotiation. 
• Apply ethical conduct to negotiation situations. 
• Become aware of ethical and cultural issues present in the negotiation. 
• Describe the positive and negative aspects of practices and discourses on negotiation.

This training workshop is an introduction to processes for addressing conflict in various settings by introducing various mediation models and techniques as well as communication skills for mediation. 

There are online and in-person training components totalling 32 hours of training and instruction. Here is an opportunity for you to learn:

The training also presents some aspects the practice of mediation and principles of conflict management in fields such as human resources, labour relations, social services, family law, community relations. The dynamics of conflict, power relations and communication in different contexts are also introduced. 

Participants will learn how to mediate disputes and the impact conflict has on values and beliefs. They will develop the skills and techniques needed to resolve disputes effectively such as conflicts in the workplace.

 Our advanced mediation training is designed to give participants the skills needed to become ADR practitioners.

Building on material and skills  introduced in the Introduction to Mediation Skills, this advanced training  examines frameworks for addressing conflict in complex settings through several lenses, and discusses advanced mediation models and techniques.

Participants can develop skills as mediators and explore the techniques and tools of the mediation process. The stages of the mediation process are explored in greater level of detail.   Key mediator skills are taught such as conflict resolution approaches, conflict analysis, and process selection. In addition, we discuss  important contextual factors such as power imbalance and cultural differences. Instruction includes assigned role-plays and simulations.
